Changes Coming To Porter Square Galleria with Walgreens Coming In Big

The countdown is on to grab a great discount at Porter Square’s Pier One store. The store closes next Wednesday to make room for the impeding new Mega Walgreens that will break ground next year.

While this Walgreens will not be as large as the planned Downtown Crossing location, it will still take up two floors at the Porter Square Galleria. In addition to taking over Pier One, Walgreens will be taking over the currently vacant Blockbuster Video and Kool Smiles, located on the second floor of the Galleria.

No word yet on if the former Uno’s will be taken over but as recently as March there was a sign up in the former pizza joint stating that the city of Cambridge would be holding a meeting to discuss use of the space and possibility of a neon ‘Walgreens’ sign at the location.

Walgreens hope is to build a store to compete with the CVS located across the street. The new Walgreens will offer fresh food, wrapped sandwiches and expanded beauty section. They will not be offering eyebrow grooming and possibly alcohol like the Walgreens that will be taking over the old Borders in DTC, but that could be a good thing – mixing the two is not the best combination. No word yet if either of these stores are going to be open 24 hours; CVS in Porter Square and the Shaw’s Market are both currently open 24 hours, a rare treat in Cambridge.

The good news for people who live in Cambridge and Somerville and frequent Porter Square (which seems to be about half the WLBT staff) is that Anna’s Taqueria and Planet Fitness seem to be staying put for now. Hey, we have to work off those burritos, right?
