Google wants to help you take a field trip around town.
Google has unveiled a mobile app that alerts users of “fun facts” around them as they navigate through a city. The app helps people explore Boston (as well as 5 others cities) in a whole new way, showcasing hidden spaces and long forgotten history.
“The idea behind the app was to build something that would help people connect with the real, physical world around them,” said John Hanke, a vice president of product at Google.
Topics include historical trivia, architectural landmarks, and even obscure restaurants and coffee shops. The app sends updates, based on alert settings, to the user centered on location specific data that Google has complied.
Right now the app is only available for Android phones, but an iPhone compatible version is in the works.
