Boston has no shortage of popular eateries. From time to time, however, a very good restaurant seems to fall through the cracks and misses out on the recognition it deserves. In this semi-regular series, we will share our picks for those underrated dining spots that might strike your fancy.Up next: Metropolis Cafe
By no fault of its own, Metropolis Café is often overlooked for some of the South End’s more loudly hyped restaurants. But, if you ever happen to pass by, I’d suggest you drop in.
The folks behind Metropolis Café consistently turn out a really solid product. Perhaps this should be no surprise, as it’s owned by the Aquitaine Group, also responsible for the various Aquitaine locations, Gaslight and Union Bar and Grill. Fun fact: Metropolis Café was their first resto.
The Metropolis Café is situated in a small space (it’s the South End, what were you expecting?). So get comfortable. Saddle up to the bar – the bartenders there are always quick to joke and very attentive.
The food is delightful – generally reflective of seasonal offerings. One of the best times of year for Metropolis Café is a cold winter night. Dig into a warm plate of comfort food with a good glass of red wine and watch the snow fall lightly outside. It’s a spot well-suited for a great first date, a night out with your best girl friend, or a night when you want to pretend you’re in a movie.
Allegedly, they have a killer brunch as well. I’m all for that! Oh and a food recommendation, if I may? Try the Cauliflower and Potato Gratin. It was to-die-for. Coming from a Cauliflower avoider, this is big news!
