Channeling Derelicte: Local Designers Reach for Anything But Clothes

This Thursday, deconstructed carpet tiles, amputated chair legs, shredded draperies and dismantled door hardware will bombard the pristine shell of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in South Boston. Famous in the Architectural, Design, Vendor and Construction industry in Boston the IIDA of New England Fashion Show and Benefit Gala had an attendance of over 1,000 guests every year.

Architecture and Interior Design firms team up with various vendors to design, construct, and fiercely model avant-garde one of a kind fashions built mainly of industry products.  The less “traditional” materials used, the better the team’s score in the end.

2012 brings the theme of AudaCITY. Firms planning to have a submission in the show are asked to interpret this theme and consider the materials they will be using.

The firm I work for has participated in this event for the past 4 years. They have won Best in Show 2 times and Best Use of Materials once in those 4 years! This year… I will be modeling…I’m hoping I don’t wipe out in front of 1000s of people on my face, in an outfit made of…oh wait… that’s top secret until Thursday night.

In addition to the “fame and glory” a firm and its vendors receive, the IIDA Gala is a charity event which raises money for Dress for Success.  The organization “promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women…by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.”  The organization provides suits and accessories free of charge to disadvantaged women to assist them in creating a professional image for an interview.  Once she finds a job, Dress for Success assist the woman in building a professional wardrobe.
