The Shite Sixteen kicks off with our first round the week of March 18. The polls close at 11:00 p.m. the evening that the match-up is posted, and we encourage you to throw your votes around and lobby as hard as you want in the comments. Seriously. Be shameless.

Today’s Round 1 Match-Up: (4) The Last Drop (5) T’s Pub

Last Drop

The Last Drop (as defended by Dan F.): The Last Drop in Oak Square is your quintessential neighborhood dive bar; no one is hopping the 57 bus from Kenmore or cabbing it in from Somerville to get there. Inside you’ll find the regular crowd from the surrounding area; however, at 1 AM after all the nearby bars have closed, all bets are off as various enchanting individuals stagger on over to get their drink on for another hour. Pool sharks: there’s a table for you, often filled with intimidating men who I can only assume want to take my money, so I stick to darts. Dart spectators: though that seating may look optimal for viewing, watch out that the errant dart doesn’t fly your way. Drinkers: there’s a good selection of beers, the glasses are clean, and there’s a pretty wide variety of liquor, although ordering an apple martini might draw a sideways glance from the otherwise friendly bartenders. Hungry? No food available, but outside food is allowed – nothing says “classy” like standing at the Last Drop’s beautiful wooden bar and shoving crab rangoon into your drunk face.  Need to pee? The men’s room gives new meaning to the term “water closet,” as it is actually the size of the closet and the floor is always covered in puddles (I try not to think about from where). Like Maxwell House says (and I may be paraphrasing here), “It’s Good to Drink at the Last Drop.”

T's Pub, site of our pre-game reception

T’s Pub (as defended by Drea): Probably the best BU dive bar and while certainly not the dirtiest of dive bars in this competition, a strong contender none the less. Pair a post-sports game destination (with sweaty hockey players + their families) with standing Tuesday night karaoke and you have a place where you will see a lot of familiar faces. It feels like a local neighborhood bar – the food is decent, the beer is cheap, the staff is friendly. In fact, when (former) owner Steve got to know you and the line out front got long, you might even find yourself welcomed through the back. One friend summed it up, ‘it was a damn good place for a young, poor BU guy.’
