Free Burritos for a Year!

Okay, so there’s no such thing as a free lunch. You’ll have to earn it.

Forget about what you’d do for a Klondike Bar – what would you do for a year’s worth of free burritos? Would you chug gallons of horchata? Or do the Mexican hat dance for hours on end? How about consuming as many picante peppers as Peter Piper could possibly pick?

One of Beantown’s best Mexican eateries, El Pelón, is offering you a chance to win a year’s supply of their delectable burritos by participating in their annual “Fiery Fifteen Contest.” Entrants in the qualifying round have the devilish task of consuming fifteen habanero peppers within as many minutes. Those whose wills and stomachs prove iron enough to keep the peppers down will advance to the final round. If you’d like to throw your sombrero in the ring, you can register at their Eventbrite page for a mere $15; schadenfreude-enthusiasts who’d prefer to simply watch can grab a free spectator’s ticket on the site as well. Qualifying rounds will be held at both the Fenway and Brighton locations every Wednesday in April.

On May 1, El Pelón will host the epic final round in which competitors will be served a series of increasingly red-hot chili peppers; as one-by-one they fall victim to watery eyes, stinging throats, and/or rebelling intestines, a winner will emerge. This fire-breather will win unmeasurable respect, an enormous trophy, and 365 delicious burritos (that’s one per day – no lump sum payouts). If I had to guess, this person will also have the distinct honor of calling in sick to their job for a least a week.

Why wouldn’t you participate in an event heralded as a “test of endurance and stamina and poor judgment”? You. Habaneros. Glory. Sign up today. ¡Buena suerte!
